7 Things That Can Go Wrong with Your Home

Every person believes that their home is a fortress which provides safety and comfort. However, in order to really be so, you need to make sure that your home is functioning with flying colors.  Even the simplest issue, like having an outdated air-conditioning unit or living your TV on can put you and your property in danger.

In order to avoid this and many other potentially harming situations, you need to know more about the things that can go wrong with your home. And here are some of the usual suspects.

1.     Damaged roofing system

After winter, check your roof for damages like broken shingles and crack to prevent da rainwater and animals to enter your home. Also, always clean the gutters before the raining season since debris can clog it and cause overflow, so the water will enter your walls and foundation. Although some roof repairs are pricey, they will save you from further expenses, structural collapses and preserve your health. However, with regular roof maintenance, you will only deal with minor issues that are cheap and easy to fix even by yourself. You can start with Mighty Dog Roofing as they have services that might suit your needs.

Pest infestation is bad for your health and it can endanger the stability of your house. Termites are a very common infestation if you have rotting firewood, mulch, and clogged gutters. They can enter into the foundation of your house and cause it to collapse in a matter of months. Also, rodents can enter through the cracks in the façade and roof, broken windows and doors, and make nests in your home.

To prevent these issues, clean the area around and by your house regularly and repair damaged fixtures of your house. It is also ideal to call Tewantin pest control to stop the infestation before it gets worse. Also, call animal control if you notice that any animal created a nest in your home or on the roof for safe and human removal.

3.     Fire

Contrary to popular belief, fire is not so common occurrence, but it's very volatile and deadly. It is caused by a variety of things from faulty appliances to overloading circuits. To minimize the chance of fire, always turn off your appliances and devices, and be careful when handling stoves and furnaces. Install fire and smoke alarms in all rooms, not just the kitchen, and always have a fire extinguisher nearby.

4.     Gas leaks

If the gas pipe is not properly connected, loose, or damaged, it may lead to lead to leakage which can cause fire or explosion. Natural gas is highly flammable and it would take the smallest of sparks to set it on fire and lead to a life-threatening situation. Carbon monoxide, on the other hand, is an odorless and colorless gas that is highly toxic for human and animal life.

To prevent these dangerous situations, install gas detectors in your home and turn off the supply line whenever you notice an unpleasant odor or hissing sounds. Pay attention to signs like dying plants, headaches, nausea, and a higher gas bill which can all point out a potential leak.

5.     Faulty electrical installations

Faulty electrical installations can lead to appliance damage, fire, and even loss of life if not properly taken care of. Always check the capacity of a socket before you plug-in appliances, especially those that will work non-stop like a refrigerator. If you notice that the power switch is getting warmer when on or a circuit breaker is constantly going off, then it's time to call an electrician to detect a problem. Damaged wiring can lead to in-wall fires and electrical shocks which can endanger your life and the lives of your family and neighbors.

6.     Piping system and leakage

The moment you notice any kind of problem with your pipes, you should call emergency plumbing services and avoid trying to deal with the problem by yourself. Pipes drains, and valves are the number one cause of leakage in homes and can lead to significant property damage and health issues like mold. If caught early, leaks won't do much damage to floors and walls so shut down the water supply and call the plumber immediately.

7.     Break-ins and theft

When you do the landscaping or move into your home, always include property protection in your plans and budget. A burglar alarm and motion sensor lighting outdoors are in most cases enough to deter anyone from trying to break into your home. Modern security systems allow control via your smartphone and are very easy to install without cameras and automatic locks, as well as wireless appliance control.

Finally

While accidents happen, some incidents are possible to prevent when you know all the things that can go wrong with your home. Protecting your home is not so complicated and expensive if you do it from the start and in a timely manner.
