Changing Your Lifestyle to Reduce Your Cancer Risk

Half of all men and a third of all women in the United States will get cancer at some point in their lifetime. If you don’t want to be one of them, although there is nothing you can do to remove your risk completely, there are a lot of things you can do to lower your risk of getting the disease in the future.

Here are some simple lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your cancer risk right now:

Quit Smoking
It may not be the easiest thing to do, but giving up smoking, even when you’ve had the habit for years, is possible and it is the biggest thing you can do to cut your risk of a future cancer diagnosis. If you find it difficult to quit, there are many health professionals who can and will help you kick the habit once and for all.

Eat a Healthier Diet
Eating  a diet that’s low in processed junk food, saturated fats and added sugar, and high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins won’t prevent you getting cancer, but it will cut your risk significantly because illnesses like obesity and diabetes and the associated problems that come with them, can increase your risk of cancer, as can eating processed meats.

Get Active
As well as eating a healthy diet, getting more exercise, at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, will lower your risk of breast and colon cancer, and if it stops you from becoming overweight or obese, possibly many other cancers too.

Change Your Job
If you work in an industry where you risk being exposed to dangerous cancer-causing substances and your bosses don’t seem to take health and safety as seriously as they could, and you don’t want to be speaking to a lawyer for mesothelioma cancer twenty years down the line, you might want to think about changing your job or at the very least reporting poor practices, right now. No job is worth your future health, after all.

Wear Sunscreen

Skin cancer is an extremely common form of cancer which is so sad when you consider that it is so easy to prevent by always wearing a high SPF sunscreen, staying in the shade when the sun is at its peak and keeping the skin covered. If you’re a tanning salon fan, staying away from the sun beds and faking your bake instead will also help to cut your risk significantly.

Practice Safe Sex
Unsafe sex can increase your risk of cervical cancer if you’re a woman, and it can indirectly increase your risk of various other cancers, including cancer of the lung and liver if you contract HIV or hepatitis from a sexual partner. Ideally, this means that you should always use a condom during sex unless you are with a steady partner and you’ve been immunized against the HPV virus that causes cervical cancer.

Take matters into your own hands and practice these cancer prevention tips today to keep your personal risk as low as possible.

  2. That's so true! Aside from changing our way of life, it is important to change our eating habits. Most of the foods that we eat are sprinkled/soaked with chemicals. As much as possible, eat organic foods and avoid too much sugar. Cancer cells love it.
