These Jobs Aren't Just For Men

When you’re a woman, it can be tempting to think that your career path needs to stay traditional. However, we are now living in the 21st century and opportunities are now open for females that have never been available before.

Not so long ago, women were channeled down particular routes. They could choose only from certain sectors such as teaching, secretarial and office work, nursing or retail. Now, no path is closed. Women can do anything they put their mind to and employers are learning to embrace equality within their workforce. If you’ve always wanted to join the army, the police or the fire service, why not? Women are now free to take any job they like so long as they have the skills and qualifications.

When females choose a career path today, they can choose from a world of opportunities. However, even now, some roles are still seen mainly as a “man’s job”. Yet, simply because certain jobs are associated more with men than women doesn’t mean that a woman is forbidden from entering those professions. In fact, women could benefit greatly from exploring some of these more unusual career paths. Here are just some which modern women might want to bear in mind when choosing the right industry for them.

Architecture
Architects hold responsibility for designing both domestic and public buildings. They also must ensure that the buildings they design are safe and functional while also meeting the needs of the people who will be using them. It isn’t easy to become an architect – long years of study are involved. The minimum requirement to enter this profession is a five-year university course of study. However, it’s well worth the effort when you bear in mind the high salary of $80,000 which can be commanded at the end of all that hard work.

Barbering
When anyone thinks of a barber, they tend to think of an aging man in an apron. However, that image couldn’t be further from the truth. While at one time women were more associated with female hairstyling, more of them are opting for the male hairdressing path. Today, there is a much higher demand for barbers than for hairdressers, so women who choose this career path can enjoy much better job prospects overall.

Computer Programming
The world of information technology has simply exploded over the last few years. Employers across all industries and sectors are looking for experts in computer programming to help them to bring their organizations up to date. Women are equally suited to this job as men and as long as they have the appropriate Bachelor’s degree, they have everything it takes to succeed in this role. There are global opportunities to look forward to, so this is a path for adventurous women.

Engineering
There are countless different engineering roles now open to women, and for those who enjoy working with their hands and who have the right skills and experience, it can be an extremely lucrative job. Aeronautical, civil and mechanical engineers are just some of the available positions, and since there is an active recruitment drive to persuade larger numbers of girls and women to enter this career, the future looks positive for female engineers.

Welding
If you ever saw the movie Flashdance, you’ll be well aware that welding isn’t purely a male profession! Women are well suited to becoming welders thanks to the attention to detail that so many women put into their jobs. More women than ever before are now choosing to enter this career path thanks to its attractive salary and exciting potential. For your own safety, it’s important to wear the right safety equipment such as welding gloves, a welding helmet, and a welding jacket, but after that, it’s just a matter of practice and skills for any woman to be equally talented at welding as a man.

Any of these career paths could be the perfect choice for any modern woman. Whatever your tastes and interests, there I no need to feel trapped into a traditionally female job. Push the boundaries, try something different and reap the benefits of exploring a completely different career ladder that would never have been open to your grandmother.
