How to Use Railway Sleepers in the Garden

Believe it or not, railway sleepers are actually quite trendy when used as a building material in the garden. Nowadays, they are used in many modern landscaping designs; not only are they attractive, they are also durable and extremely adaptable. In fact, they can be used for a variety of garden creations, from raised beds for flowers and vegetables to benches and other furniture. Here are some additional suggestions:

 A Sandpit

If you have kids, you could think about building a sandpit for them using railway sleepers. This is an exciting project for any enthusiastic DIY-lover and will provide your little ones with unlimited entertainment during the summer months. The sleepers act as a border and you can make the sandpit as big or as little as you’d like.

A Retaining Wall

Bricks and concrete are more expensive than railway sleepers when it comes to building a retaining wall in your garden. Typically, they are installed horizontally when creating an attractive low level wall. Don’t forget about drainage when building your wall, as there’s a chance that water could accumulate behind it.

Steps

Most people have stone or brick steps in their garden, so railway sleepers is quite a unique option and one that will set your landscape apart from the rest. They add quite a rustic look and are easy to both install and maintain.

Lawn Edging

If you would like to create an edge effect around your lawn, sleepers are a great option. They can be used in single height or could potentially be stacked to create more of a defined divide. Dividers like this are quite contemporary and help you separate each section of your garden.

There are many ways to use sleepers and you’ll find that not only are the results aesthetically pleasing, they are also affordable and rewarding. They are available in both softwood, such as spruce or pine, and hardwood which is typically oak. Both are fantastic options for any landscaping project.
