What are the top style rules for dressing your age?

There are some style “rules” that you’ve probably already heard quite a lot, some of the most common beings that you shouldn’t wear miniskirts over 40, or you shouldn’t opt for anything sleeveless once you’ve passed 50. However, while there may be a lot of people who still abide by such age-related dictations, we’re here to question what the term “age appropriate” really means and to dispel some of the assumptions about how you should treat fashion as you age.

Never underestimate the power of a tailored jacket

As you get older, it’s likely that you’ll start to curate a classic wardrobe. Investing in some key pieces isn’t only a financially sound idea, but it means that you’ll no longer have to worry about how to solve wardrobe dilemmas that can leave you feeling overwhelmed and under confident. In that case, a tailored jacket or a sharp cut blazer is one of the best friends your wardrobe could ask for. This is one of the most versatile items of clothing out there – it can be worn with plus size dresses for a classic evening look or over a white t-shirt and jeans for something more daytime casual. Go for something made from good fabric that’s cut in a way that flatters your body shape.

Choose your signature colour

A successful style is one that you can wear for years to come, and you’d be hard pushed to find a style icon that doesn’t have a signature that you can spot a mile off. Your focus should, therefore, be on dressing in a way that you love, and colours will play an important part in achieving this.   Your signature colour should be one that says something about who you are. More often than not, this is something that will find you, whether it’s the colour of your favourite jumper or an accessory that you base every outfit around. This doesn’t mean that you have to dress exclusively in the same colour, however. Instead, work it into your outfit using accessories, footwear and even makeup.

Don’t be afraid to flaunt your best feature

There’s that famous saying – if you’ve got it, flaunt it – and no matter your age you should embrace this as much as you can. Fashion should be considered a form of self-expression and be learning how to accentuate your favourite feature is an important part of this. Whether it be your waistline, your shoulders, your legs or elsewhere, make sure that you know which clothes work best for you and, more importantly, which you feel the most fabulous in.

You can look cool and be comfortable

Those that aren’t a huge fan of teetering around in stilettos all day will probably feel relieved at the fact that, for the past few seasons, style gurus have traded their heels for stylish trainers. The fashion industry is currently buzzing with the idea that comfort comes first and because of this, even the biggest labels have jumped on the athleisure bandwagon, a trend that doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon and one that can transcend even the strictest age boundaries in fashion. Be aware, however, that with this look it can be difficult to achieve the type of luxe you might get with, let’s say, a pencil skirt and a crisp white blouse.
