Money-making: Whose Advice to Take and Whose to Throw in a Lake

There are many times in life when you might be looking to make some extra money. You might be a struggling student, someone who's just lost their job, or just saving for the future. Whatever your reasons for wanting to make some money, probably outside of traditional jobs, you likely have a lot of questions about the best ways to do it. The first thing many people do is start searching for the best ways to make money, both online and offline. But who should you trust? Here are some places where you might find advice, and how reliable and useful they might be.

Official Money Advice Resources
If you look for money advice, you're sure to find some official resources from the government or from charities or altruistic organizations. These are good places to start if you're looking for practical advice. These resources usually have websites, so you can easily access them online. They offer advice that's backed up by evidence, and they tend to stick to the facts. That means they can be useful for finding the most reliable money-making options and help you work out other money issues too. However, they aren't always the best resources if you're looking for new and interesting ways to make money because they prefer to play it safe.
Blogs and Online Magazines
Blogs, magazines and online newspapers are also common online. These resources can vary greatly, so it's up to you to find the ones you like. There are different organizations and individuals behind them, and that can be a good place to start if you want to work out whether to trust a particular organization. You might be willing to trust an established publication like Forbes, for example. Or you might enjoy reading The Fortune Investor, a blog run by Michael Banks MBA, who has 20 years of experience in finance and business. But you might be more reluctant to trust a random blog that doesn't seem to have a particular person behind it. It's better if you can put a name and even face to the advice, so you can see if they know what they're talking about.
Career and Job Advisors
Sometimes, when you want to make money, it's not just as an extra bit of cash on the side. If you're in need of a job or you want to give your career a boost, you're likely to be looking for a different kind of advice. Fortunately, career advisors aren't only available at school. You can also get guidance from specialist services if you're looking for professional advice on where to take your career and how to do it. If you don't want to pay for career advice, you can always get it for free online. However, it's important to remember that not all free advice is meant for you. While you get tailored advice if you pay for it, you have to decide what's worth listening to if you get advice for nothing.

Entrepreneurs and Business Professionals
There are always plenty of people with experience in business and finance who can offer you lots of advice on making money. These people can be found in a variety of places, from your local business community to radio and TV. Find some blogs written by successful entrepreneurs or watch a TV show about being successful in business. Speaking to people in person is often best. Try to make connections through networking events or even using social media, such as LinkedIn or Twitter.
Money-making Tutorials, Guides, and Courses
Here's one option you need to be cautious about. You're sure to find lots of courses online that claim to help you get rich. If they're free, go ahead and download or sign up to them. You might get some useful information or you might not, but either way, you haven't lost anything. Just be careful about who you give your contact information to. However, if you're asked to pay, think carefully before handing over any money. If the course claims it's going to show you the secret to getting rich, it's probably not. Unless the secret it shows you is that promising people you can make them rich is a good way to make money. That's not to say that some paid courses aren't useful. But you should check out reviews and compare different options, as well as weigh the risk of wasting your money against possibly learning something.

You can find money-making advice in a huge number of places, and it's not all legitimate. Be careful about the sources you trust.
