If you’ve been feeling sluggish and unmotivated for a while, it might be time to assess your lifestyle. Are there areas you could change? What improvements could you make right now to make a difference?
Take some time to address the problems. How are you feeling? What are the symptoms? If the symptoms have appeared suddenly or you have any concerns, visit your doctor. He or she will be able to rule out any physical or mental illness. Otherwise, take stock. Write down how you’re feeling and try to figure out the reasons for this. Are you tired? Could this be down to lack of sleep? Are you unmotivated in your whole life or is it just work?
Be completely honest with yourself. Assess what is and what is not working for you. You can then start to sort out what you need to do to change this.
If you’re feeling sluggish, it might be as simple as getting more sleep each night. If you sleep for a good eight hours and still feel tired, it’s time to look at your sleep quality. Making small changes to your bedroom could be a simple answer.
- If your room is too light, add some blackout blinds or curtains
- Is your room too hot or too cold? Make necessary adjustments to the thermostat.
- Does your bedding suit the time of year?
- Is your pillow the best shape for your sleep position?
- Do you need a new bed or mattress?

If you are satisfied that you have addressed these issues it might be time to visit your doctor to discuss other underlying causes.

Certain food can make you feel tired. For example, white carbs and sugar. Try replacing white carbohydrates like bread, pasta, and rice with whole grain alternatives. Cut down on the amount of sugar you consume.

Are You Getting Enough Exercise?
It seems a little topsy-turvy to think that exercise can be a cure for tiredness. Logic tells us that the opposite might be true. However, this is not the case. Low-intensity exercise boosts energy levels, making you feel more alert.
Is Your Mind Stimulated?
Feeling bored or under stimulated can result in a lack of motivation and tiredness. If you’re ever bored at work, do you notice how sleepy you feel? If your work is the problem, it’s time to take steps. Could the situation be improved? If not, it might be time to look for something else.
If you’re happy with your job but it isn’t fulfilling you, consider doing other activities outside of work. It might be that your job is corporate, with little opportunity for creativity. Consider taking up a hobby that allows you to build on your creativity. This could be a simple as coloring or art. Or you may want to take photographs or play a musical instrument. Whatever fires you up will do you good.
Some people find that focusing on positive areas of their lives also improves their mood. Write down three positives every day. Or keep a gratitude journal. There are lots of health benefits of gratitude.
