From Chaos to Clarity: Digital Detox Strategies That Actually Stick

The digital world can be overpowering at times, and as humans, we’re really not programmed to handle all of this content, especially the volume that we’re exposed to daily.

As such, it’s important that you take time to step back where you can to reset and give your mind a break from it all. Digital detoxes can be great to try out, and by strategizing them, you can hopefully help them to stick and make a significant impression.

What really happens when you take a tech break

When you take a break from using technology, you give yourself the opportunity to reset. It becomes more than just a break from the tech but a chance to do something more with your time, whether that’s to read a book you’ve not picked up in months to seeing friends and making it a no-phone social experience.

Taking tech breaks are important and something you want to do more of where possible. It can make a big difference to how you feel in yourself and how you enjoy more of the world around you when you’re not hooked to your phone.

Small detox habits that lead to big mental shifts

There are some small detox habits that can make a big difference to how you feel mentally in yourself, especially when it comes to weaning yourself off of technology for a while.

Designate screen-free zones

Try to make certain areas of your home a screen-free zone. Particular areas like the dining table or the bedroom can be completely device-free in order to help keep some spaces free from the hold that technology often has on us.

Implement a digital sunset

Avoid screens for at least an hour before bed, as the blue light can often disrupt your sleep quality as a result. This digital sunset can be something that takes place in rooms where you’re relaxing or connecting with others through conversation over the dining room table.

Setting aside specific times each day to put your phone away is helpful to keep in control of your phone usage.

How to reintroduce tech mindfully after a reset

After any digital reset, it’s important that you’re introducing tech mindfully. With that being said a few good tips include the following:

Prioritize intentional interactions

Firslty, look to prioritize your intentional interactions. Opt for more direct methods of communication like seeing people in person, rather than talking to them over social media where you don’t at least get to see their face or hear their voice.

Curate your apps

It’s a good idea to delete any apps that aren’t adding significant value to your life, only keeping those that actually support your values.

If there are apps that are causing you to become to reliant on your phone, then it’s worth limiting these apps or getting rid of them completely.

Pause and ask yourself if you need to use your phone

Before you pick up your phone, ask yourself why you need to use it or look at it. This will help distinguish it’s use and to make a decision on whether you need it or not.

If you’re looking to improve your relationship with technology and social media going forward, look at taking a digital detox.
