Effective Teeth Whitening Procedures – What You Should Know

Many people choose to have their teeth whitened for up and coming special events or occasions where they want to ensure they look their best – complete with a dazzling white smile. These events include weddings, milestone birthdays, award ceremonies and job interviews.

With the younger generation being increasingly selfie-crazed and constantly sharing photos on social media, it is no wonder that teeth whitening has become one of the most common procedures asked of cosmetic dentists across the world.
Different Types of Teeth Whitening Available

There has been a lot of advancements made in the area of teeth whitening over recent years. This means that just about anyone in need of a brighter smile will be able to benefit from a type of teeth whitening procedure of some sort.

Teeth whitening toothpaste: While you may think that using a commercial toothpaste that promotes a magical teeth whitening formula, pretty much all commercial toothpastes are not strong enough to actually make your teeth any brighter than they already are. There is a place for teeth whitening toothpaste, but it is best to be used after you have received a professional whitening treatment from your dentist. You can use whitening toothpaste to help maintain your bright smile and help to remove any new surface build up that can lead to staining.

Over-the-counter teeth whitening kits: A few oral care manufacturers have devised safe at-home teeth whitening treatments that mimic the treatments that dentists can offer. You can buy teeth whitening strips or tray devices with a whitening solution to use to treat your teeth overnight. While these at-home treatments can be effective over time, the results can take a lot longer to achieve and you may well end up spending more money in the long term than you would with a whitening treatment from your dentist.

Abrasive natural treatments: There are a lot of people that can be sensitive to the bleaching chemicals used in most professional teeth whitening treatments. As an alternative, you could try using a natural abrasive tooth powder to physically scrub away surface stains from your teeth. This could be effective in removing some stains from smoking, drinks and food, but they don't actually act to brighten your teeth and are not effective enough to completely remove deeply engrained stains. However, regular brushing with baking soda, coconut oil and ground minerals can help encourage you into a regular oral care routine that can help to reduce the build up of future stains.

Teeth whitening at your dentist: Your dentist can present you with a choice of very effective teeth whitening options following a thorough oral examination and a health check to make sure that you are not sensitive to any chemicals or substances used in the treatments.

The level of whiteness achieved from your treatment will depend on your needs and goals. Your dentist will be able to work out the most appropriate level of treatment for you and the type of procedure to follow that will best suit your lifestyle.

Your treatment may involve having regular visits to your dentists for them to treat you, or it could be that you will be given a tailored at-home treatment, such as a tray and whitening solution, to use overnight for a period of time.  Having your dentist supervise and apply your treatment will ensure that you get a very even and quality result. Strips and home treatments can leave gaps or areas of your teeth that are not adequately covered. For a better result, make sure your dentist supervises your teeth whitening treatments.
