Parenting Content - 3 Ways Parents Can Help Their Kids Succeed in the Classroom

WyzAnt.com currently has the largest network of certified tutors available on the web – over 66,000 and counting- which means exclusive access to top study tips and proven practices to help students succeed in the classroom. While the majority of learning happens at school or during private tutoring sessions, there are some actions that parents can take at home to contribute to their child’s overall academic success.

After reviewing hundreds of tips submitted by our network of private tutors, we found the following to be the most commonly reported:
1. Ask your kids to teach you what they learned during their lesson. “The most important feature of an engaged student is critical thinking. Critical thinking is understanding a subject in your own words, and being able to explain the subject to others,” says WyzAnt language tutor Rachel M., from Evanston, IL. Pretend that you’re unfamiliar with the topic and encourage your child to play teacher! 2. Initiate positive and open communication. “Always discuss the lesson and tutoring session with your child. Find out what is going on,” says WyzAnt tutor Valerie J. from Dallas, TX. The more you communicate the less you have to read between the lines to find out where and why they are struggling. In certain cases, the method of teaching can conflict with a child’s learning style, which is why WyzAnt offers a good fit guarantee for each student.
3. Emphasize a healthy mind and body! “This means eating right, getting enough sleep,” says WyzAnt test prep tutor John B. of Harleysville, PA. Many outside factors can affect sharpness in the classroom. While it’s impossible to control all aspects of your child’s day, a consistent bed time and balanced meals are important habits that can be established in the home. Help your child reach their potential. Search private tutors in your area today!

PRESS RELEASE: SAVE HEARTS WITH ART – ROTARIANS

The Rotary Club of Makati West (RCMW) is calling on art lovers to support their annual all-sculpture exhibit-sale dubbed “Alay Sining”to be held at The Gallery, Greenbelt 5, Makati City from November 12 to 15, 2015. Now on its eight year, Alay Sining 8’s theme is “Art with a Heart” which complements the Rotary International’s theme of “Be a Gift to the World”.
Alay Sining is a fund-raising initiative for one of RCMW’s signature projects, the Gift of Life program, which gives congenital heart disease (CHD) patients under the program with free heart surgeries.
According to RCMW President Victor “Junvee” Vital, supporting the art-for-a cause exhibit will not only mean supporting Filipino children with heart ailments but also local artists.
Both seasoned and new sculptors will be contributing pieces to the Alay Sining, and donating a portion of the sale price of their art pieces to the exhibit’s intended recipients – the CHD patients that will be given free heart surgeries under the Gift of Life program.

“If you support Alay Sining, you don’t only support children with heart ailments, but Filipino artists as well. So I say, “Start saving hearts through art,” said Vidal.

Rotary Club Makati West officers and members (L–R) Edsa delos Santos, Davy Lim, AP Bartolome, Alay Sining 8 chairman Paolo Delgado, Greenbelt’s Cel Gera, Ayala Malls manager Mina Domingo, RCMW president Junvee Vital, Roque Tordesillas and Patrick Dionisio are joined (center) by the beneficiaries of the Gift of Life program and their parents.
Rotary Club Makati West officers and members (L–R) Edsa delos Santos, Davy Lim, AP Bartolome, Alay Sining 8 chairman Paolo Delgado, Greenbelt’s Cel Gera, Ayala Malls manager Mina Domingo, RCMW president Junvee Vital, Roque Tordesillas and Patrick Dionisio are joined (center) by the beneficiaries of the Gift of Life program and their parents.
According to Paolo Delgado, this year’s chairman of the exhibit’s Organizing Committee, this year’s Alay Sining will be joined by over a hundred artists who have sent their respective works for the exhibit.

“They are from all over the country – we have some from Palawan, Mindanao and Cebu. So, it’s really a Philippine-wide sculpture shop, and what’s really nice is that all of the artists have joined because they want to support the Club and the Gift of Life,” said Delgado.

Some of the participating artists of the Rotary Club of Makati’s Alay Sining 8 showcase their artworks during the exhibit’s recent presscon: (L-R) Jaime Nepomuceno, Glen Cagandahan, Benjamin Dailo, Fred Caedo, Kish Javier, Helena Alegre, Merlito Gepte, Jaime Gubaton, Milmar Onal, Ral Arrogante, and Jinggoy Salcedo.

“They (the artists) have taken all the time and the effort to be with us. We’ve had a lot of them over the last eight years, and they have been with us since the first Alay Sining, when we are still learning how to run an art exhibit. And it’s really been heartening and we are very thankful for all the support that the artists have given us,” he added.

Explained Delgado, congenital heart disease usually forms at a very young age, and the mortality rate is not very good.

“Even if you do survive, you end up living a life with some sort of a handicap… you will not be able to engage in sports which young kids should be doing at their young age. So this fundraising that we run for the Gift of Life can really make a world of difference for the children out there,” he said.

RCMW member and former president Roque Tordesillas said that the cost of a heart surgery in a private hospital ranges from Ph800,000 to more than Php 1 million if for an open-heart surgery.

“But because of the work we have done at the Rotary over the past 11 years, we have established ties with the National Children Hospital, our main partner, which have brought down the costs because of subsidies. So that the Club only pays about P100,000 up to P200,000 especially for more complicated surgeries.

Tordesillas also lauded the Alay Sining artists calling them the “heroes” in this project.

“They are the real heroes of this program because they are the ones contributing their works, their artistry, and their hearts for this particular project. Without the artists, there will be no Alay Sining. We have had very generous artists who have contributed their talents to the cause over the years, so that the hearts of children are saved.”

Speaking on behalf of his co-artists, Ral Arrogante, who have been with Alay Sining since Year One,  said that for them artists, doing charity completes their vocation.

Since we cannot contribute cash, we contribute our works. We can’t fully consider ourselves as artists if we don’t do charity. Our works are the best things that we can contribute),” he said.

Disruptors are welcome, from an old school perspective to the most advanced technological breakthroughs in power supply, whichever era you may be, CHANGE is inevitable.

PRESS RELEASE: #MabiniMabiskeg Project

Typhoon Koppu (local name, Lando) is a super typhoon that hit Northern and Central Luzon in the Philippines, leaving a sore devastation to communities. Despite this, as nation of undeniable human spirit, we are mabiskeg enough to go through anything. Mabiskeg is the Pangasinense term for strong and firm.

Mabini is a town in Western Pangasinan. It is one of the most devastated  by Typhoon Koppu (local name Lando). In Mabini, schools are one of the hard-hit structures, and some of the structures are in isolated areas. More often than not, people who watch the news or read the paper offer relief goods, clothes, medicines, and toiletries as forms of help. Only few give attention on the education of the children who are affected, how the kids can go back to their schools.

This project is to maximize and spread out the help people can offer. This may sound little, but a notebook can do so much especially that many families lost literally everything; it would help them get back on their feet and start again. Furthermore, the focus is on education because I was a child in that town who experienced being evacuated and all that. I could have saved other things, but my Mom would tell me to save my bag. I resolve that to parents, knowing that their children go back to school is quite a relief.

The main focus of the campaign is to consolidate school supplies, but it would be best to include basic needs like cash, relief goods, clothes, sheets, medicines, and toiletries because many families were not able to save a single thing due to flashfloods. For local cash donations, please contact Franz Marabe through 0999 551 4843. International cash donations are also accepted through online fundraising campaign via Indiegogo (https://www.generosity.com/fundraisers/typhoon-koppu-relief-funds/x/12530349). Anyone from abroad may click the link to donate. Rest assured all monetary donations will be converted into helping the children go to school again. In Quezon City area, donations can be turned in through Romelie Tamares (0936 694 9555). For Makati area, reach Koko Alviar (0917 826 1557). The crowdsourcing campaign runs until the 6th of November 2015. The items will be delivered on the 7th of November 2015.

Another part of the project is to tap interested groups especially student organizations, fraternities, and sororities to spearhead or partner with local teachers and government officials to help rehabilitate the damaged schools. Interested parties may reach me through triumphjpaquino@gmail.com.

If typhoons can leave a mark, why can’t we? Let us help out and rebuild our nation together. As how they put it, the Filipino spirit is waterproof.

PRESS RELEASE: Health Concerns of Filipinos from Herbalife Poll

MANILA, Philippines - Nine in 10 Filipino consumers surveyed by global nutrition company Herbalife are “highly concerned” about the potential diseases that an unhealthy lifestyle can cause them, with the same number believing that simple lifestyle changes can help improve their overall well-being.
A good number of the respondents expressed willingness to adopt a healthy lifestyle; 79 percent said that they would cut down on unhealthy foods, 78 percent expressed their willingness to exercise more regularly, and 72 percent said they would make better nutrition choices.
“We welcome the results of the survey. It gives an understanding of Filipinos becoming even more health concious and self-aware that they need to make some lifestyle changes to improve their overall well-being. It also gives Herbalife an idea where we are needed, because as the survey revealed only four out of 10 would spend 10 to 30 minutes a day to make simple lifestyle changes,” said Rosalio Valenzuela, Herbalife Philippines General Manager.
The respondents, however, cited the following as the top obstacles to achieving a healthy lifestyle: lack of time for exercise (75 percent), lack of time to make proper nutrition choices (64 percent), and high cost of healthy food (62 percent).
The same health poll likewise showed that the top three aging-related concerns in the country were heart, brain, and eye health.
Better knowledge and understanding
“The findings from the Herbalife survey clearly show that the majority of people in Asia Pacific that we questioned believe in the value of good nutrition and exercise as contributing to their overall well-being. We aim to play a greater role in providing practical tips and information to people to help them understand that the journey to a healthier, more active lifestyle is not difficult to achieve. With as little as 10 minutes a day, consumers can take positive steps to improve their nutrition and be more active, which will improve their overall well-being,” said William M. Rahn, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Herbalife Asia Pacific.
Herbalife conducted the survey in September 2015 in the lead-up to its Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour. It surveyed 1,200 respondents across six countries, including the Philippines, on perceptions towards their health and current lifestyle. Respondents from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Thailand were likewise included in the survey.
Herbalife Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour
Now on its fourth year, the Herbalife Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour aims to deepen people’s practical understanding of the various aspects of living a healthy active lifestyle. Its previous tours in the past three years saw close to 60,000 participants across the region.
This year’s Wellness Tour will feature five members of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board (NAB) visiting 14 markets and 21 cities across the Asia-Pacific in the month of October. They will share their expert views on how people can make use of the little time they have to make simple lifestyle changes that will enhance their well-being.
Herbalife’s NAB experts will likewise share their views on a wide range of health-related topics, including weight management, brain health and aging; heart health; immunology; and skin care at the medical symposia being held in Australia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnamn.
The Herbalife NAB experts participating in this year’s Wellness Tour include Dr. David Heber, who incidentally will be coming to Manila, is a leading expert in the field of nutrition and named as one of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” by Thomson Reuters in 2014 and considered one of “The Best Doctors in America”; Dr. Lou Ignarro, a Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine in 1998 for his discovery of nitric oxide’s health benefits; Dr. Gary Small, a specialist in brain health and aging who has authored over 500 scientific works and has received numerous awards and honors, including the “Senior Investigator Award” from the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry; Dr. Marion Fltechner-Mors, a health nutrition specialist who is currently heading the nutrition and obesity research group at ULM University, Germany; and Dr. Wang Jae Lee, a physician and academic specializing in immunology and a professor at Seoul National University College of Medicine.
Dr. Heber, who is the founding Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles, will be conducting a symposium for free to Filipino medical practitioners on October 23, 9am, at the Manila Hotel. The symposium will gather a group of 100 doctors, nurses, physical therapists and medical practitioners. The title of the symposium is “Obesity: More Than Just Being Overweight and Nutrition Forecast for 2020.” Seminars of Dr. Heber are recognized by US hospitals as part of Continuing Education Studies, which are often required of applicants. The following day, Oct. 24, Dr. Heber will be holding seminars for thousands of Herbalife Independent Members in the same hotel.

This is the first time Dr. Heber, who is also the Chairman of the NAB and the Herbalife Nutrition Institute, to conduct a seminar in Manila since the company was founded in the Philippines 22 years ago.

PRESS RELEASE: Defend against the Deadly Dengue

Despite continuous studies for the treatment of dengue, the mosquito-borne disease remains to be incurable. Since the epidemic outbreak that started in the Philippines and Thailand in the 1950s, 64 years later, the best discovery to address the deadly fever is still insufficient. While there is a vaccine that is formulated to prevent dengue, its efficacy is yet to be fully tested nor is it available to the public. We are left with no other choice but to rely on prevention.

However, just last year, a new type of dengue is discovered. This means that the new strain is more capable of enduring the body’s mechanism, making it stronger and harder to cure. With all these threats coming despite the progress in finally developing the treatment, still, it does not erase the people’s apprehension in having the disease.

While there is a vaccine that is formulated to prevent dengue, its efficacy is yet to be tested. We are left with no other choice but to fully protect ourselves from having this disease. After all, it’s a smart move and just like what they always say, prevention is always better than cure. One way to prevent dengue and other mosquito-related disease is through Strike Multi-Insect Killer.

Strike is a fast-acting multi-insect killer that has a water-based formula which effectively kills mosquitoes and other insects. It has lower toxicity as compared to the leading brand, thus, it is safe for people, pets and plants. Strike is also environment-friendly unlike other oil-based insect killers and it contains no Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC). It leaves to stain on the surfaces of your home and does not release disturbing odors.

Aside from the multi-insect killer spray, Strike also comes in other variants like Strike Coil Mosquito Repellent, Strike Mat, Strike Liquid Mosquito Electric Repellent and Strike Patch.
For just an affordable price, reduce the risk of having dengue and other mosquito-related diseases with the help of Strike. Strike Multi-Insect Killer Spray is available at SRP P130.00 for 300ml can and SRP P246.00 for 600ml can. Strike is available at Mercury Drug and other leading drugstores nationwide. #‎ATChealthcare‬
